2009 Arts & Historic Preservation Grants Awarded

The Community Foundation of Louisville received 28 proposals for grants from its competitive Field of Interest Funds in 2009. A Field of Interest Fund is an endowment restricted or recommended by the donor to be used for a broad charitable purpose without designating specific recipient organizations or programs. The Board of Directors approved a total of eight grants for 2009 from the following funds:

The George and Mary Alice Hadley Fund (1991): Grants support the arts and humanities with special emphasis on visual arts, crafts, theater and the Louisville Free Public Library. A total of 20 grant requests were received and reviewed. A total of $26,500 was available for grantmaking and awarded to the following organizations and programs:

Actors Theatre of Louisville – $1,000
To support a playwriting program for pregnant teens attending South Park TAPP

Americana Community Center – $10,000
To provide a year-long visual arts program for youth that culminates in a summer arts festival     

Brooklawn Child and Family Services – $2,250
To provide a drama program for 15 youth ages 6-12

Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft - $2,500
For craft workshops to develop a sense of “community” among African immigrants and African-American residents living in Parkway Place

Lighthouse Promise - $2,100
For a summer drama and performing arts program for youth in the Newburg neighborhood

Louisville Central Community Center – $8,650
To support a visual and performing arts education program for 25 youth ages 8-16, focusing on the historic Harlem Renaissance.

The Historic Preservation Fund (1986): Created by Edith S. Bingham to support the preservation of historic and prehistoric resources of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky, through the advancement of public education and culture, combating community deterioration, the publication of information pertaining to such resources, and collaboration to achieve such purposes. A total of $6,500 was available for grantmaking in 2009. Eight proposals were received and reviewed. The Board of Directors awarded the following grants:

Chapel of St. Philip - $5,250 for the restoration of stained glass windows

Historic Locust Grove - $1,250 for a structural condition assessment.
